Post-doctoral research associate position in data assimilation and hurricane forecast improvement

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate in the area of atmospheric data assimilation and hurricane forecast improvement. The work will be performed at University of Utah in collaboration with scientists in NCEP Environmental Modeling Center, NOAA Hurricane Research Division and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Successful candidate will conduct research to advance science in hurricane data assimilation at cloud-permitting scale, and evaluate the impacts of radar,in-situ, current and future satellite observations on hurricane forecast improvement with various data assimilation configurations. The candidate will write manuscripts for publication, in collaboration with faculty and graduate students, as well as with outside collaborators.

Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences and relevant fields, a strong mathematics and physics background, excellent writing skills, proficiency with high-resolution atmospheric models such as HWRF and WRF, familiar with advanced data assimilation systems such as GSI, WRF DA, ensemble Klman filter system, and strong programming abilities (familiarity with Linux, FORTRAN, IDL or Matlab, and Python are desirable). The position is available immediately and the starting date is negotiable based on mutual interests. The initial appointment will be for one year, renewable dependent on the performance and availability of funding.
